Mauvin picked to lead Cong poll campaign
HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, FEB 7
In what could be termed as a move to control his tirade against the government, the Congress party has decided to appoint Cortalim legislator and Deputy Speaker of the Goa legislative assembly Mauvin Godinho as the party’s campaign manager for the assembly polls to be held next year.
The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting between Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and Congress General Secretary in-charge of Goa desk B K Hariprasad.
Sources in the Congress said that Hariprasad was in Goa for a brief visit on Sunday and met the chief minister at his official residence.
Initially, the Congress had decided to appoint Mauvin as the working president of the party. The Cortalim legislator rejected the post, sources said.
However, sources added, it is still unsure whether Mauvin will accept the post of campaign manager.
When contacted by Herald Mauvin refused to comment saying he was busy in a meeting.
Efforts to contact him late thereafter proved futile.
However, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Subash Shirodkar admitted there is such a possibility.
“That possibility is there,” Shirodkar told Herald when asked whether Mauvin would be appointed campaign manager.
Justifying the decision, the GPCC president said, since the polls are fast approaching we need to create such posts.
“We are going to elections and as such we have to create responsible posts in all 40 constituencies for the success of the party,” Shirodkar said.
He, however, denied that the offer to Mauvin is to stop his outbursts against government.
“He is a responsible party man and the party has recognized his efforts,” was how Shirodkar reacted to the question.
