The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has introduced a new annual contract system aimed at providing financial stability to domestic players who often miss out on Indian Premier League (IPL) contracts. The initiative is expected to begin from the 2026–27 season and is being seen as a progressive step for Mumbai cricket.
Under the new structure, players will be divided into three categories — Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C. Grade A players will earn between INR 12 lakh and INR 20 lakh per year. Grade B players will receive between INR 8 lakh and INR 12 lakh, while Grade C players will be paid around INR 8 lakh annually.
MCA president Ajinkya Naik stated that the move marks a new era for Mumbai cricket, adding that it will offer better security, structure, and development opportunities for players representing the state. The decision was taken by the MCA Apex Council.
To qualify for the contract system, players must meet specific criteria. They should be registered with the MCA, maintain required fitness standards, and should not have represented India in any format in the last two seasons. Additionally, players should not have been part of any IPL franchise in the last two seasons and must be recommended by the selection committee.
The system is designed to reduce financial imbalance between IPL and non-IPL players and ensure that consistent domestic performers are rewarded. It is also expected to motivate young cricketers to focus on domestic performance, even if IPL selection does not come immediately.
