Mehli Mistry, a prominent M Pallonji Group director and close confidant of the late Ratan Tata, has chosen not to seek re-election as a trustee of the Tata Medical Centre Trust (TMCT). His term concludes on September 30, marking his sixth departure from a major Tata institution following Ratan Tata’s passing in October 2024.
Having served on the TMCT board since 2017, Mistry’s exit leaves the governance of the 600-bed Kolkata cancer hospital in the hands of Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata, his children (Leah, Maya, and Neville), and former defense secretary Vijay Singh. Responsibilities for the hospital had already begun transitioning to Noel Tata after Mistry invited him onto the board in late 2024.

This departure highlights an ongoing retreat by Mistry from institutions tied to Ratan Tata’s personal legacy. His exit follows blocked terms and resignations from other key bodies, including the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT), the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), and Mumbai’s Small Animal Hospital. However, Mistry remains a lifelong trustee on the board of the Tata Education and Development Trust, the wealthiest trust within Tata Trusts. Observers note that these rapid exits underscore a broader succession and governance struggle playing out behind the scenes at Tata Sons.
