MGP to contest 20 ZP seats

Considers alliance with like-minded parties in remaining constituencies

PANJIM: The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) on Friday announced to contest 20 Zilla Panchayat seats on party lines while considering going for alliance with like-minded parties in the remaining constituencies.

The Zilla Panchayat elections for 50 seats will be held on March 22. BJP has already announced list of 18 candidates while Congress is slated to contest on 40 seats. Goa Forward Party has decided not to fight the polls on party lines but to extend its support to individual candidates. 

Addressing media persons, MGP MLA Ramkrishna Sudin Dhavalikar said that the upcoming Zilla Panchayat election conditions are conducive for MGP, Congress and other Opposition. 

“It would be more favourable if united Opposition comes in the ring,” he said. 

Dhavalikar said that party’s Executive Committee, which will be meeting on Sunday, has for now decided to contest 20 seats.

“In other constituencies we will support like-minded candidates,” he said. 

Responding to a question, former minister said that the party has got offer from Congress and independent candidates for alliance. 

“The party will take a call. We are considering the proposal,” he said.
