PANJIM: The second meeting of the House Committee to study issues related to River Mhadei which was to be held on December 27 has been postponed and the same will now be held on January 10, 2025 in the PAC Room of the Goa t Assembly Complex, Porvorim at 11 am.

The 12-member House Committee under the chairmanship of Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar has so far met only once in February this year. The House panel was constituted after MLAs during discussion in the Legislative Assembly raised their concern over the reports of diversion of Mhadei waters by Karnataka.
Though the exact reason for postponing the meeting was unknown, it is learnt that some of the Members of the House Committee were unavailable.
Meanwhile, Goa Forward Party (GFP) president Vijai Sardesai, who is also one of the Members, slammed the State government for its casual approach on the Mhadei river issue. The government is not at all serious on Mhadei issue and is doing time pass, he said.
In a letter written a letter to the House Committee chairman last month, Vijai had demanded immediate convening of the meeting so as to ensure that the government is prepared with the required expertise and a concrete strategy.
“This is a matter of utmost urgency; each delay not only weakens Goa’s position but risks the future of the Mhadei itself,” he said.
The Fatorda MLA has also recalled that assurances made in the Legislative Assembly to convene the Mhadei House Committee meeting after Ganesh Chaturthi festival had not yet materialised.
