NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court’s verdict on a batch of review petitions of the Goa government and Vedanta Limited for resumption of the iron ore mining remains in suspense.
A Bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and M R Shah on Wednesday held a second in-camera examination of the petitions, the first one on January 21, but did not declare its decision on the pleas to reverse the judgment of February 7, 2018 by another bench shutting down all mines.
The lawyers in the cases did not have any inkling of the decision since the review petitions were taken up in the chamber, not allowing them to present their case. The Bench examined the cases on the basis of eight petitions filed by the State government and Vedanta, each submitting four petitions each in 2019 and 2020.
The verdict in the in-chamber proceedings is usually made public on the Supreme Court’s website, but nothing was put on it till past 11pm. The lawyers said the decisions in such cases are at times declared the next day.
