MARGAO: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Churchill Alemao on Wednesday demanded stringent action against those responsible for lacing fish with formalin to increase its shelf life by playing with the lives of Goans.
Stung by the fact that a young footballer from his village has been ‘diagnosed’ with cancer, he said formalin laced fish has been provided to Goans for a long time now.
“In our childhood when fish was not imported we used to stock dry fish during monsoon, but all that changed as traders began getting fish from outside Goa and selling it here,” he said.
He opined that fish, which was imported, was always laced with formalin and by consuming such fish the number of cancer cases has increased exponentially in Goa.
“I demand that FDA should first check the fish imports for formalin content and stringent action should be taken against those responsible for bringing fish laced with formalin,” he demanded and appealed to the government to treat the matter seriously.
He said a beginning could be made by arresting the drivers of those trucks in which the formalin laced fish was found as they will lead to the main culprits.
