VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer has vowed to continue to act against the encroachments along the footpath and garbage dumping in open spaces within the municipal jurisdiction.
Gaurish Sankhwalkar informed that he would discuss these issues with the municipal officials and would take necessary action against violations within municipal jurisdiction.
It is pertinent to note that dumping of garbage into the open spaces has become a common practice in Vasco. The municipality has taken initiative to create awareness among the public to stop the littering in the open. MMC via its signboards has warned the people of various fines to deter people from dumping waste into the open.
However, the municipality has failed to come out with concrete solution as there appears no end to the dumping of garbage into the open.
On Wednesday, an NGO in a letter to Chief Officer and Health Officer of Vasco complained of garbage dumping in an open space in Desterro Ward No. 7 is taking place, where a private school is just 10 metres away from the spot. The letter also highlighted various dangers and health related issues which children may face due to the garbage near school.
When asked about the issue, Chief Officer Sankhwalkar informed that he has not received any such letter from anyone.
“Once I receive it and if I find any such illegal waste dumping is taking place, strict action will be initiated,” he added.
Meanwhile, public in Vasco are facing parking problems due to lack of enough space. Some locals have blamed the inefficiency of the municipality to act against footpath encroachments, which is totally neglected by MMC.
It may be recalled that the previous Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes had initiated an anti-footpath encroachment drive.
