MARGAO: Following complaints about alleged illegalities taking place at Gandhi Market Margao Municipal Council (MMC), councillor Mahesh Amonkar has demanded immediate action to curb such activities taking place at the market. Amonkar added that he had already spoken to MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar and got assurances that the municipal market inspector would be sent to the Gandhi market and all the files related to the shops mentioned in the complaint would be examined by the Chief Officer for further action.
According to Amonkar, two shops have been allegedly taken over by a businessman illegally. He added that the person who owned the shops had passed away and there was no transfer of ownership to any blood relation and yet the shops were open. Furthermore, he said that a common boundary wall between the two shops had been illegally demolished without the MMC’s permission to widen the size of the shop’s premises.

Amonkar added that this is just one example of the numerous illegalities taking place at the market and he claimed that there are even some shops where the original owners have passed away and some other persons have occupied such shops.
It may be recalled that the MMC Chairperson had also given an assurance at the council meeting that a survey would be done of both the Gandhi market and the new market to check on such issues of illegal subletting, third parties running shops illegally etc, given that MMC is earning less revenue from the markets as compare to what is due to the civic body.
