MARGAO: In an interesting development, Margao Municipal employees on Monday opposed the introduction of the bio-metric finger scan readers for recording of attendance from Tuesday.
A meeting of the employees held under the banner of Goa Municipal Employees Association (GMEA) has warned the civic body that they will be forced to resort to tool down/pen down strike the moment muster roll is withdrawn by the council.
Association general secretary Anil Shirodkar said the employees are open to discussions and negotiations on the implementation of the bio-metric finger scan readers as per the High Court order. He, however, said that outgoing Chief Officer Sandhya Kamat tried to implement the system from April 16 via a circular without discussing the issue with the employees and resolving their grievances vis-à-vis the concept.
The association communicated its decision not to use the bio-metric finger scan reader to the chief officer on Monday evening, hoping that better sense will prevail and the chief officer will not make it a prestige issue.
“The circular dated April 8 should be either cancelled or revoked and withdrawn and be kept in abeyance till such time, the statute is amended and marking of attendance through bio-metric scan machine is put in force and the grievances of the workers are addressed by the council”, Anil asserted.
He said that the employees will resist the concept tooth-and-nail in the event the civic body imposes the bio-metric finger scan on the workers.
