VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council has drastically failed live up to its promise of keeping Vasco Saptah fair plastic free this year.
When the Saptah stalls were dismantled after seven days, area was found to be an ugly place with full of plastic waste littered on the road and in the drains.
Following this, the locals say that, next year, the MMC should give permission for stalls only after taking a written undertaking from the vendors that they would collect and dispose their waste.
Nitin Phaldessai, a Vasco resident, said that the Municipality makes many promises, but it does not fulfil them. “After the Saptah fare, the internal streets in town are full of plastic waste. I feel that the MMC should make it compulsory for vendors to collect their garbage and dispose it,” he said.
Yogesh Shet, another local, opined that the MMC must take an undertaking from the vendors that they would not use plastic at the fair or at least they would collect the garbage and dispose it.
When contacted, MMC Chairman Nandadeep Raut denied that plastic waste littered on the roads after the fair. “I personally took a round and found that only plastic used for packaging purpose was left astray and there are no plastic bags littered,” he said.
