MARGAO: South Goa District Magistrate on Friday directed the Margao Municipal Council to file reply within one week in the proceedings initiated under Section 133 of the CrPC vis-a-vis the nuisance and unhygienic conditions in the SGPDA market complex.
Though the Magistrate has issued notices to both the SGPDA and the Margao Municipal Council, only the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) filed its reply stating the steps initiated by the Authority to clean up the market.
In its reply, the SGPDA maintained that it would soon start the drive in the fish market, while admitting that the Authority had been facing problems to clean up the fish market.
SGPDA Member Secretary Rajesh Naik informed that the Authority has submitted to the District Magistrate the ongoing exercise launched in the vegetable, fruit and meat markets in the complex through the Green Goa Works.
Meanwhile, the Margao Municipal Council, in a letter to the SGPDA has asserted that the markets referred to in by the District Magistrate are being owned, managed and controlled by the PDA, adding that the Council is only providing services of day-to-day lifting of garbage on payment of fees.
The civic body said that there is possibility of foul smell in the markets since fish is cut and cleaned in the markets, adding that the PDA should ensure that the market is kept clean through the private agency engaged by the Authority.
As far as disposal of thermocol waste is concerned, the MMC said it is unable to dispose off the waste since the same is not accepted at the Sonsodo waste treatment plant. Moreover, the Civic body has asked the PDA to take a decision to discontinue the usage of thermocol fish crates since the same is creating nuisance in the markets.
