The celebrations were launched at the hands of Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado in the presence of Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, MMC Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello, Chief Officer Narayan Sawant, city fathers and citizens.
In his address, Avertano highlighted the rich history associated with the Margao Municipal library. He recalled his college days when he used to avail the library facility to read newspapers. “The Margao Municipal library has a rich history. Till date, the reading section still draws readers from across the city and outside,” he said.
Digmabar Kamat said the MMC should devise methods to attract the younger generation towards the library and inculcate the reading habit. ‘I was a regular visitor to the Municipal library when it was housed in the Comundiade building. We should inculcate reading habits in the new generation since reading enriches knowledge,” he said.
Vijai Sardesai said the city fathers should not only maintain the heritage, but also ensure that the civic body caters to the requirements of the citizens.
