The meeting proposed that the KTC pays a fee to MMC for lifting the garbage from the area. It was also informed that the KTC has currently appointed a contractor to clean up the area. It is also learnt that there exists around 15-20 stalls in the KTC campus area and a fee is collected from these kiosks.
During the meeting, concerns were raised that the garbage behind the KTC bus stand has been increasing and is sometimes burnt at the site. It was also observed that the stall owners also dump garbage in the area.
During the meeting, the waste being dumped by inter-state buses was also brought up and criticised. Cleaning of these buses added to the garbage mess the members alleged.
The meeting was attended by senior officials of KTC, Health Department, MMC chief officer Yeshwant Tawde, Chairperson Babita Angle, vice chairperson Dorris Texeira and other officials. The meeting was convened after the MMC received directions from the Governor’s office to initiate measures to clean up and control the garbage mess.
The MMC officials said that the KTC was asked to store the collected garbage at one single point but the KTC had failed to comply. They pointed out that they had written to KTC in the past to arrange for a JCB to clear the garbage and that at least 5-6 trucks be used to pick up the garbage.
All issues regarding the garbage generated at the KTC stand were discussed and it was decided that a survey needs to be carried out to evaluate the quantity of garbage generated and dumped in that area.
