VASCO: Non-payment of monthly salary forced the Mormugao Municipal Council employees and labours to go on strike from Monday. The employees and labourers met the Chief Officer and put forth their demands. Failing to adhere, they warned to continue their strike.
Around 50 to 70 MMC employees including manual labourers went on strike on Monday after they failed to receive their monthly salary of January. They sat before the municipality building and also met Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes and explained to him the problems they faced due to irregular salary.
Some MMC employees informed that the workers do their work sincerely and attend their duties regularly then why are they facing the problem of irregular salaries in every two months time. Some workers, who have opted for loans face hurdle paying their monthly EMIs and to give money at home for household work.
Meanwhile, Chief Officer Agnelo, who is holding additional charge of MMC informed the reporters that the grievances of the workers and employees are genuine.
“I made a point to come and listen to the problems on a humanitarian ground,” he said. He further said that he will intensify the recovery dues exercise to generate revenue.
Fernandes also revealed that he will make an application to the government requesting for special grants to pay workers’ salary.
