Mormugao Municipal Council to go banner less soon

VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council will be the first municipality to go banner less soon, according to Vasco MLA Krishna `Daji’ Salkar.

Salkar informed this to mediapersons after distributing sanction letters of Laadli Laxmi scheme to beneficiaries at Vasco on Tuesday. He said that many including politicians (himself) and others were putting up hoardings and displaying banners of birthday and festival wishes without obtaining prior permission from the municipality.

He said that many a times these banners block visibility causing accidents and traffic congestion in the port town. The municipality was also not getting any revenue from those putting up these banners and was also giving an ugly look to the town.

“I have requested Mormugao Municipal Council to stop having banners at all and set an example by being the first town which will be banner free. We are planning to identify two to three spots where there is no hindrance to the public view and only these spots can be used for advertising,” he said.

Salkar said that besides causing accidents, the banners were also causing pollution as the flex cannot be recycled.

Vasco BJP Mandal President and councillor Deepak Naik said that going banner less  was a great initiative of Salkar and that the council will soon pass a resolution in this regard. He said that many cities across the country have become banner less and the cities were looking neat and clean. He also added that the council will ensure that the banners would be made of cloth materials only.

Mormugao Vice Chairperson Amay Chopdekar, councillors Shami Salkar and Girish Borkar and others were also present.
