MARGAO: Maina-Curtorim Police have disclosed that a report has been sent to Margao Electricity Department to ascertain the exact cause of fire which broke out at Naveen Distillery, at Nessai, late Friday evening causing damage to goods, alcohol and other chemicals.
According to police, so far no fire accident has been registered and Electricity Department report is awaited. Police assume it may be a case of short circuit. However, exact cause of fire will be known only after a report from the Electricity Department is obtained.
Margao Fire Station office said the estimated loss may be in lakhs but so far no estimates have been done.
Five fire tenders were pressed into service from Margao, Curchorem, Ponda and Verna to bring fire under control.
According to available information, it is learnt that a tank containing alcohol and chemical caught fire which spread causing heavy loss.
Police said, “Usually distilleries are closed in the evening and it was closed at usual time. However, security personnel saw some smoke and fire emitting from the distillery.”
Immediately, Maina-Curtorim Police and Margao Fire Service were informed and rescue operation was conducted.
