PONDA: Ponda police on Thursday arrested an ayurvedic doctor on charges of molesting a girl. According to PSI Gokuldas Malik, the accused, Dr Mahesh Patil (28) of Khandepar had gone to Ponda and while climbing the staircase of a building, he is alleged to have molested a 14-yearr-old girl who was proceeding to her residential flat.
Lecture on role of nuclear weapons
PANJIM: Forum for Integrated National Security, Goa chapter, is organizing a lecture series on the Role of Nuclear Weapons in India’s National Security at Institute Menezes Braganza hall on Friday. Prof Bharat Karnad, Senior Fellow, Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi will deliver the lecture. Former High Court judged R M S Khandeparkar is the president of FINS Goa chapter.
Five rescued off Baga
CALANGUTE: Five tourists from Jharkhand and crew members had a lucky escape when a boat carrying them capsized off Baga. The incident took place at about 10 am when lifeguards noticed a capsized fishing boat in a surf zone about 100-150 mtrs away from the shore. A lifeguard in the tower saw the capsized vessel and relayed an emergency call and rushed to the aid of the victims. The lifeguards at Baga and Calangute on receiving the emergency call promptly launched a jet ski rescue towards the spot. A backup team also followed. Five crew members were found struggling as they swam towards the shore and they were secured and safely brought ashore.
Clampdown on drunken driving
CALANGUTE: Clamping down on drunken driving and other offences, the Calangute Traffic Cell (CTC) has booked 217 offences in Calangute since the past eight days. The CTC has so far booked 127 persons for drunken driving, besides booking 90 persons for other violations in the coastal belt of Calangute. The CTC team headed by PI Shaikh Salim has been carrying out surprise checks during peak hours from 1 pm to 4 pm and after 11 pm. Shortly after an Alcometer was provided to the CTC on August 13, the CTC commenced its drive during the holiday weekend of Independence Day celebration and it is continuing.
Truck with coke powder goes missing
VASCO: A truck laden with coke powder worth Rs 35 lakh has gone missing, after it was dispatched to Mumbai. According to Mormugao police, Ravi Shankar, regional manager of Standard Transport Solution Pvt Ltd, Ponda, lodged a complaint with the police on August 18 stating that a truck (MP-04-HE-0887) belonging to one Pankaj Tendua, which was loaded with coke powder, went missing en route to Mumbai. He stated that four trucks loaded with coke had left MPT port to Mumbai on August 12. While three trucks reached their destination, the fourth truck (MP-04-HE-0887) with 600 bags of coke worth Rs 35 lakh along with the driver Vinod and cleaner Mukesh Sharma had gone missing.
Chain stolen from jeweller
PONDA: A gold chain worth Rs 45,000 was stolen in broad daylight from a jewellery shop near Hotel Menino in Ponda on Thursday noon. Pradeep Raikar, owner of Guru Jewellers, complained to Ponda police that a youth in his twenties visited his shop and showed interest in a gold chain worth Rs 45,000 from a showcase.
German found dead at Calangute
CALANGUTE: A 50-year-old German national was found dead in an apartment at Calangute on Wednesday. Calangute police has sent the body of Marijo Jandric for an autopsy at the Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim and a case of unnatural death has been registered. PSI Nitin Halarnkar is investigating.
Vasco woman dies in accident
VASCO: A young woman from Vasco died while another youth was injured in a road mishap near the NSD gate at Dabolim on Tuesday night. According to Vasco police, the incident took place as a truck proceeding from Alto Dabolim to airport knocked down a scooter (GA-06-H-7453), which was also going in the same direction. The rider, one Johnson (20) and pillion rider, Prashiki Pereira (26), both from Vasco sustained injures in the mishap and Prashiki later died at the Chicalim hospital. The Vasco Police has registered the offence and PSI N Palekar is investigating.
Sal sarpanch voted out
BICHOLIM: Sal Sarpanch Ghanashyam Raut was on Thursday voted out of office by 4-0 votes in the seven member panchayat. The four panchas supporting the motion were Aapa Raut, Sajjan Naik, Ramnath Bhaeep and Pranita Naik. Suryajirao Rane was the presiding officer at the meeting. Meanwhile, Vishnu Zalmi was elected as deputy sarpanch of Pilgao panchayat at a special panchayat meeting attended by four panchas.
Public meet at Margao today
MARGAO: Margao-based Jai Damodar Association has called for a public meeting at the Lohia Maidan on August 22, at 4.30 pm to highlight injustice and corruption in the State. The meeting will take up issues, including the delay in constituting the Lokayukta, police reforms, government’s zero tolerance to corruption, mining, the Vasco rape case etc.
Raikar showed him the gold chain and the youth darted out of the shop and fled in a Dio scooter. Raikar tried to chase the youth, but was unable to nab him.
I-Day celebrations at Carmel College
NUVEM: The students of Carmel College in Nuvem celebrated the 68th Independence Day at the college premises. Chief guest Dr Philomena Sequeira Antony, former HOD of History department of Parvatibai Chowgule College and an ex-student of Carmel’s was felicitated. Sr Maria Christi, Principal Dr Sr Aradhana and staff members were present. The programme concluded with the NCC song ‘Hum honge kamyaab.’
