PANJIM: National Institute of Technology (NIT) Goa has submitted a proposal to the State government on alternative technology that would operate a water treatment plant despite power break downs.
“Public Works Department received a proposal from NIT-Goa giving a solution on alternative technologies to run a water treatment plant in absence of electricity. If regular water supply fails to reach the plant, the alternate power system can be pitched in to source water from the next source dam,” PWD Chief Engineer Uttam Parsekar said addressing a gathering at the 50th Foundation Day of the Indian Water Works Association’s (IWWA) Goa on Tuesday.
While a final decision on the proposal has not been made public, in another development PWD will sign a MoU with a Portuguese firm to replicate the service model for water and sanitation services. The announcement comes ahead of Portuguese Environment Minister João Pedro de Matos Fernandes’ visit to Goa between September 28 and 30. The name of the company is Águas de Portugal Internacional.
The decision was made after a team of PWD engineers headed by Chief Secretary Dharmendra Sharma had visited Portugal to study the type of wastewater treatment systems and technologies used in operating water treatment plants.
“Water treatment and sewage treatment plants’ automation is one of the important requirements for the State as it improves the quality of products as well as reduces requirements of manpower. We want to make entire water treatment and sewage treatment plant system run under SCADA systems,” Parsekar added.
