PERNEM: The ongoing two-month- fishing ban has not caused a dip in sale of fish in Pernem as the markets are overflowing with vendors and customers.
However sources informed that the fish available in the markets are either frozen fish, fish sourced from local fishermen or from those who import fish from Maharashtra.
Sources informed that most of the fish vendors from Pernem buy fish from wholesalers from Mapusa and Vengurla and then re-sell it in local fish markets. However, there has been an allegation made that the local fishermen have continued fishing even though the fishing ban is in force.
Even though the authorities at the Patradevi border check-post are checking vehicles transporting fish before they enter Goa, there are several other routes, which are used by these vehicles to enter Goa. Locals allege that routes such as the ones through the Aronda and Satarda bridges that connect the two states, are being used for the same. They point out that there are many vendors that are travelling to Vengurla and then selling the fish at the fish markets in Pernem on a daily basis.
However, currently the amount of frozen fish has reduced and this has increased the demand for fish sourced from the local fishermen.
One vendor from Pernem stated that while they get some fish from the Mapusa market, most of the time, they procure fish from the Maharashtrian vendors, who bring the fish and sell it to them.
