No more rote of math, science formulas

School students learning mathematics and science by the rote will be history in a year or two as the National Council Of Educational Research And Training (NCERT) is preparing new manuals to promote learning through experiments.
Already 14 laboratory manuals are ready and manuals in other subjects, both in English and Hindi, will be ready before the next academic session, a NCERT official said, pointing out that they will enable the students understand the concept of formulas through experiments.
He said the prime goal of these manuals is to enable the students understand the concepts and clear their “fundas” through experiments instead of memorising formulas through the rote. Teachers are being trained at the NCERT centres at Bhopal, Ajmer, Bhubaneshwar, Shillong and Mysore to adopt the new regime and encourage students to learn by asking questions instead of learning by rote.
Noted octogenarian educationist Prof. Yashpal praised the NCERT’s effort, stressing that its new manuals will strengthen the experimental and activity skill of the students. It will encourage the students to understand whatever they are taught through own experiments, he said.
