PANJIM: Although list of proposed bus stops on most village and city routes have been sent to the collector a month back, the same are yet to be notified.
The transport department informed that the stops have been sent for notification almost a month back. It had threatened strict action against buses found stopping at undesignated stops with fines that could run upto Rs 2,000.
“We have sent the list to the collector to be notified,” transport director Arun Dessai told media adding that the list included village stops too.
One of the prime spots where violations take place right under the nose of the traffic cops is the Police Headquarters, near Panjim market. During peak hours these buses block traffic and the conductors stand in the middle of the road calling out to passengers.
On village roads and even in areas like Caranzalem and Taleigao, the buses literally crawl and stop at almost every 200 mts forcing traffic to stop.
Bus owners say that the people want them to stop while the general public
say that the authorities are not taking action as there are “other considerations” that make them keep their mouth shut.
The main objective of these city route buses is to get the vehicle full to make the trip profitable.
In doing so, the conductors put the lives of commuters, who hurriedly cross the road to board the bus, at risk.
