PANJIM: The Goa government has made a slew of announcements to ensure that daily wage workers are not left in lurch due to the lockdown in view of spread of COVID-19

Minister for Labour & Employment Jennifer Monserrate on Saturday informed that around 15,000 registered construction workers will get a monetary package and Rs 4,000 to each of 4,000 workers under the ongoing labour scheme.
As an emergency measure, all registered construction workers, around 15,000, shall get a monetary package equivalent of 15 days of wages of a semi-skilled worker, under the “Goa Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board Assistance Scheme,” she said as she took to micro blogging site to announce the relief package.
Each of these registered workers will be eligible to avail Rs 6,000.
She further said that government has also decided to sanction Rs 4,000 each as a onetime relief to all Goa Building and Other Construction Workers under the scheme “Goa Labour Welfare Board Assistance Scheme COVID-19”. This scheme is expected to benefit another 4,000 eligible labourers.
All welfare funds will be transferred through DBT to their bank account without any application, in a transparent manner.
“I truly hope this support may help them to tide over this calamity with dignity,” Monserrate tweeted.
The working sector in the State, alike other parts of the country and world, has almost come to a standstill due to the fast spreading of the deadly virus. While some government and private firms are working with minimum staff, many have either shut or allowed their employees to work from home.
With daily wage workers at risk of losing jobs and in turn daily income, the Central Government has allocated a whopping amount to balance the situation.
In Goa, the two schemes are being implemented by Labour and Employment Department, Goa and Goa Labour Board.
