Panel seeks official status for Marathi

PANJIM: Marathi lovers under the banner of Marathi Rajbhasha Samiti (MRS) held a dharna on Wednesday at the chief minister’s official residence at Altinho demanding official language status to Marathi.

After the half-day dharna they met with Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar. “We are demanding official status to Marathi and we have conveyed our demand to the chief minister and asked him to bring legislation in the coming monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly towards this,” said MRS president Gopal Dhawlikar.
He claimed that MRS has the support of over 25 legislators and is confident of getting the legislation passed if the government moves it. “We have been demanding for official status to Marathi for long, but now at least we expect it from the new government which is formed in the State as well as at the Centre” Dhawlikar said.
Dhawlikar, after meeting Parsekar said that the CM’s response was positive. “We expect him to bring the legislation in the coming monsoon session.”
