PANJIM: Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) will start a ferry service between Baina and Panjim on October 15. The ferry service will run once in the morning and again in the evening between Baina beach in Vasco and Panjim.
The contract was awarded to Drishti Marine Solutions Pvt Ltd, Mumbai for a period of five years. Other waterways being considered for ferry services include Palolem, Mobor, Baga, Arambol, Sinquerim and Old Goa.
MPT had earlier invited tenders to provide a floating platform, moorings, safety equipment to facilitate embarking and disembarking of passengers at Baina beach. The ferry may also have air-conditioned and non-air conditioned sections.
The move to introduce a ferry between Baina and Panjim is being promoted to help ease traffic congestion on roads, especially during the morning and evening peak hours.
Though the initial run may be once in the morning and once in the evening, additional runs may be added. While the infrastructure already exists in Panjim, work will be under way to set it up in Vasco.
