The ten-day long Ganesh festival will commence from September 2. The city market is flooded with verities of fire crackers, which are sold in large quantities.
Addressing media persons on Friday, Madkaikar said that he would like the people of Panjim to celebrated the Ganesh festival in an eco-friendly manner. “I appeal to the people to avoid the use of fire crackers during the festival. Let us try to keep our environment clean and pollution free,” he said.
“Fire crackers not only lead to pollution, but are also dangerous to human health, specially senior citizens and those suffering from respiratory problems,” the Mayor said.
He said that every person will have to take the lead and desist from the use of fire crackers during the festival.
Madkaikar informed that the Corporation has made all arrangements at the Ganesh immersion points within the city. “We have cleaned the areas and bins are put up, where people can throw their waste and nirmalya,” he said adding that the electricity department has also been requested to illuminate all the points to ensure that no inconvenience is caused to the people.
