PANJIM: The protesting Para teachers have decided to hold back the strike after Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar assured to renew their contract for the coming academic year and hike their salaries.
The strike was kept on hold following a meeting with Parsekar at the Secretariat where the teachers reiterated their demands. “He agreed to partially fulfill our demands by renewing our contract for one year and hike salaries. As such, we have decided to hold back the strike. If these assurances are not fulfilled, we won’t hesitate to come on the streets again,” one of the striking teachers told Herald emerging from the meeting.
Parsekar on Wednesday had categorically stated that the protesting teachers cannot be regularised into service as they are un-trained and not qualified with BEd and DEd courses. On Thursday, however, he asked them to complete their education through correspondence course and they would be considered to be absorbed in the service when vacancies are created.
Several para teachers, working for over last ten years were protesting for last two months.
The Para teachers had shifted their agitation to the Chief Minister’s residence in Altinho after failing to evoke any response.
