MAPUSA: The Calangute panchayat on Wednesday begun with a clearance drive to make parking spots available for tourists and locals after traffic police fined a local taxi driver, who parked his vehicle in an area designated for private taxis.
Infuriated by the fine given by a traffic police, around 50 youth from Calangute along with the Calangute Traffic PI marched to the panchayat, and demanded that the panchayat should demarcate the places where rented bikes and taxis have to be parked.
The newly elected Sarpanch Francisco Rodrigues along with the other panchas listened to the grievances of the locals and assured that the panchayat would chalk out a solution to the problem of parking issue.
The sarpanch also informed the agitated youth that on November 4 a meeting will be held with all the ward members along with the PI of the Traffic Cell to work towards finding a solution to the parking woes.
Police Inspector of Calangute Traffic Cell Salim Sheikh shared his phone number and informed the gathered youth to contact him and also send him videos of people found parking their vehicles in unauthorised places.
A villager while speaking to Herald said that there is a parking problem in Calangute.
“This parking mess would not have occurred if the panchayat had taken the locals into confidence. We demand that the panchayat organises a meeting with the locals on how to find a solution to the parking problem in the village,” the villager said.
