VASCO: The Mormugao Planning and Development Authority (MPDA) partially demolished 11 houses in the Funnel zone at Dabolim on Friday, citing height restrictions in the area. Over 1000 residents vehemently opposed the demolition and demanded that authorities stop subjecting them to such harassment.
“We’ve endured in silence from the authorities until now, only for them to take action after our houses were built. We possess all the necessary permissions, even as PM Narendra Modi’s has assured houses to everyone, we find ourselves unsupported in our time of need,” lamented a resident.

Asserting their rights, another resident stated, “This land is private, with sale deeds and mutations are in our possession. These houses were built 15 years ago. Why do the authorities suddenly wake up and carry out enforcement? The authorities should question those who sold us the land. We’ve invested heavily, pledging our assets and taking loans. Now, facing demolition, it’s unjust.”
Raising concerns about discriminatory treatment, residents questioned the rationale behind targeting their homes when nearby lamp posts and natural formations exceed their heights.
“Will this not affect flight paths? It feels targeted and suspicious. Compensation at current rates is the least the authorities owe us for the land and homes. We’re ready to vacate,” they declared.
In response, MPDA member secretary Sanjay Anurlekar clarified that the demolitions were carried out after High Court directives. He affirmed, “The High Court mandates clearing illegalities, informed by Navy data. While 11 houses are under demolition, more may follow. We will proceed as directed.”
