Chief Joint Replacement Surgeon at Orthopaedic Hospital for Surgery, Dr Shreeram Kamat Dhakankar said that an ‘Oxford partial knee replacement’ procedure was performed on a 62-year-old male patient who had been suffering from severe pain in the knee joints for many years.
Listing out the advantages, Dr Dhakankar said, “Partial knee replacement, as against total knee replacement, is now available to patients in Goa. Up to 75 per cent of the bone is conserved with this procedure when compared to total knee replacement. The procedure cost and hospital expenses are lesser as compared to a total knee replacement because recovery of the patient is much faster. The implant provides more normal motion of the human knee and since only a small portion of the knee is replaced, this procedure can be made available to a younger population. Also the patient has less pain post-operatively and can resume his normal duties in a span of a few days.”
Dr Dhakankar added, “Partial knee implant procedure can preserve the healthy bone, cartilage and ligaments, preventing or delaying the need for total knee replacement. The incision is very small and the surgery is minimally invasive. The folding of the leg is 30 per cent more in partial replacement. Sitting down cross legged is possible with this surgery.”
