PANJIM: After spending more than a month in the Post-Graduate departments of the Goa Medical College, students who were admitted to the courses after clearing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) had to pack-off after the government decided to grant admissions to students on the basis of merit of the local MBBS exams. The Government will be filing an affidavit on July 29 before the High Court of Bombay at Goa informing of its decision.
The GMC had admitted students to all the post-graduate courses for the academic year 2013-14 under the NEET. But with the Supreme Court quashing the NEET exams conducted by the Medical Council of India, the Goa government has reverted to the old procedures of admitting students on the basis of MBBS results. The Supreme Court had given the colleges option of either continuing with the admitted students or opting for the state entrance exams.
Dean Dr V N Jindal declined to comment stating the matter is sub-judice.
Since Goa government does not conduct entrance to the PG courses, the state decided to revert to MBBS merit list.
On Thursday government intervened in the petition filed by Poonam Hegde in the High Court of Bombay at Goa and stated that the government had decided to revoke the admissions and grant fresh admissions.
The High Court has ordered the government to file a written affidavit stating the same.
The last date for admissions to the PG medical courses is 31st July.
Subsequent to the government decision, 44 students admitted under the NEET merit list had to leave the campus on Thursday after their provisional admissions were cancelled. New students replaced the doctors in the departments on Friday after submitting their documents. There were students who had given up their seats at other colleges in the country as they had been granted admission in GMC.
On the other side, students who have been granted admission on Thursday based on MBBS merit say that justice has prevailed as it would be unfair towards them since the admissions to the forthcoming years would be based on merit.
