Commissioning of Cuncolim MLA and Urban Development Minister, Joaquim Alemao’s dream garbage treatment plant in his home constituency seems to have gone haywire.
Alemao had told newsmen in May last that the waste treatment plant set up at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate will be commissioned on May 20. But, it’s exactly four months now since the Minister had made the announcement, but commissioning of the garbage treatment plant and the land fill site is yet to become a reality till date.
In fact, Alemao had announced that Cuncolim would be the second Municipal body after Bicholim to have a waste management plant in place.
When questioned over the four month delay in commissioning the waste treatment plant, the Urban Development Minister admitted over the four-month delay and attributed the delay to the death of a person in the land fill site.
Saying that the waste treatment plant and the land fill site are in place, Alemao said it is a matter of time before the plant is commissioned for the treatment of waste generated in the town. “May be the plant will be commissioned before the Election code of Conduct comes into force or after the Municipal polls”, he said.
The Urban Development Minister, however, said he has plans to take up landscaping of the area by planning a garden at the waste treatment site. “I have already asked the Cuncolim Municipal Council to fence the plant site with trees so that the entire area resembles a garden”, he added.
