PONDA: Satisfied with the performance of a few LED street lights installed on a trial basis, the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) has now decided to replace all 836 normal fixtures in Ponda town with the energy efficient LED street lights.
A letter pertaining to PMC’s decision to replace 836 normal fixtures in its jurisdiction with LED street lights has been sent to the DMA for approval.
According to information, each LED street light fixture costs about Rs 6,000 and if the project is approved, then PMC will be the first in the State to have LED street lights in its region. The estimated cost of the LED street light project is about Rs 50 lakh and it will be funded by the State government.
It may be recalled that PMC a month back through an agency recommended by the Central government, installed 10 LED street lights in the city on trial basis.
“Besides councillors, residents are also satisfied with the performance of these LED street lights which consumes less power and is also low on maintenance,” informed PMC Chairperson Dr Radhika Naik.
“Through the Ponda Electricity Department, we know that 836 LED street light fixtures will be needed to cover entire the PMC jurisdiction and a proposal has been sent to the DMA for approval,” said Dr Naik.
