The Panjim police have nabbed a man using ten-rupee notes as bait to divert attention of car drivers, especially women, and then steal valuables from inside. Over the last three days policemen in civilian clothes were deployed in places like Miramar, Dona Paula and KTC Bus Stand after several incidents of car thefts were reported.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Deu Banavlikar said around four incidents of car thefts were reported from Miramar, Dona Paula (Jetty) and 18th June Road over the last three days and this had kept the police on toes.
Banavlikar said finally late Wednesday evening three constables and one Home Guard who were deployed on the 18th June Road saw one Jagan Krishna Gawda, 37, a native of Karnataka, trying to divert attention of a woman driver using ten-rupee notes and steal valuables from her car.
The SDPO said the police found ten-rupee notes in one of the trouser pockets of Jagan after he was caught. Apart from using ten-rupee notes as bait he also used to break open cars and steal valuables from inside.
He said the accused, who has been remanded to seven days police custody, had confessed he had woman members operating with him and they specifically targeted woman drivers.
Banavlikar said this tactic of diverting attention and then stealing from cars has been working on and off in the city and other cities in Goa and the police can only advise people to be cautious whenever such people come calling.
