Goa State Election Commission (GSEC) on Monday kept in abeyance the election process for Mormugao, Margao, Mapusa, Quepem and Sanguem municipal councils. The development comes in the wake of the order of the High Court of Bombay at Goa directing the issue of a fresh notification for reservation within 10 days.
The notification, released by GSEC Commissioner C R Garg on Monday evening, also said that the election code of conduct in the five municipalities stands lifted.
“The GSEC in exercise of the powers conferred upon it under Article 243ZA of the Constitution of India read with Section 10A of the Goa Municipalities Act, 1968 do hereby direct that the entire election process for Mormugao, Margao, Mapusa, Quepem and Sanguem Municipal Councils shall be kept in abeyance till further orders. The Model Code of Conduct which was brought in force with effect from February 22, 2021 for Mormugao, Margao, Mapusa, Quepem and Sanguem municipal councils stands lifted with immediate effect,” the notification states.
