Pondaitees suffer due to lack of maintenance of Kranti Maidan

Tiled flooring turns slippery after incessant rains; senior citizens forced to give up morning, evening walks

PONDA: The recent heavy rainfall has caused the tiles at Ponda Kranti Maidan to become slippery, posing a risk to citizens, especially senior citizens who frequent the ground for evening walks.

In the absence of a designated walking track, citizens have been using the rough tiles at the Maidan for walking and keeping healthy. However, due to safety concerns, the recent slippery conditions have forced many to stop their walks.

The Martyr memorial is situated at Kranti Maidan and all significant days of national importance, events such as Goa Liberation Day and various religious festivals, are celebrated here. The slippery tiles have become a hazard for visitors, potentially compromising their safety.

Located in the heart of the city opposite the Ponda Police Station, the Maidan was renovated a few years ago, beautified with name plaques of freedom fighters on installed pillars.

Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) Chairperson Anand Naik said he recently visited the Kranti Maidan and is aware of the slippery conditions causing hardship to people visiting for evening and morning walks. He said the PWD had renovated the garden and had not handed over the same to PMC.

He further informed that he and the PMC Chief Officer had discussed the issues of maintenance and cleanliness, with the officials from the PWD office. He said that the PWD has assured to address the issue before the Independence Day function.
