CANACONA: Students boycotted classes for the second day at the Government Primary School (GPS) in Ponsulem-Canacona on Friday, as parents have been pressurising two newly deputed teachers to escort their children along a 100-metre winding path to and from school.
It may be recalled that parents on Thursday morning had forcibly taken their children home in protest against the alleged refusal by the newly appointed teachers to take responsibility of their children outside the school compound.
On Friday, the GPS wore a deserted look, with only the two teachers at the school. According to sources, both teachers sat idle and left only after the end of school hours. The GPS has 35 students from Stds 1 to 4.
While both teachers have been tight-lipped, many in the taluka feel that the teachers were right in refusing the responsibility of the children outside the school compound.
“It is the responsibility of parents to take care of their children on the street. How can teachers be responsible for students beyond the school campus,” asked a source.
“At best, the aggrieved parents can demand a better approach road leading to and from the school,” the source added.
Despite efforts, the school PTA Chairman Paiek Bagdo Gaonkar could not be contacted for comments.
in the matter.
