PANJIM: The Electricity Employees Union (EEU) on Thursday held a day-long demonstration outside the Electricity Department, demanding fulfillment of their pending demands, including cycle allowance.
The EEU, affiliated to All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has threatened to go on a fast unto death from July 26, if their demands are not meet.
“Our charter of demands is pending since July, 2010. The electricity employees, in particular those who are working in the field such as linemen, meter readers, require to be issued rainwear, tools to repair line and cycle allowance,” union president AFG Mascarenhas said.
“The Electricity Department has failed to issue these items to the workers putting the life of linemen in danger. The department has arbitrarily withdrawn cycle allowance of the employees by a cabinet decision and restricted shifts to 14 per month,” he explained.
Mascarenhas said that despite several assurances from the government, the issue has remained unresolved. The Union has urged Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar to intervene in the matter.
