Power restoration work at Margao

PANJIM: In the last two days the heavy torrential rain with cyclonic wind has swept over the entire Salcete taluka resulting in frequent disruptions in power supply.

At many locations the overhead conductors have snapped, trees have uprooted and fallen on power lines and poles have broken due to the cyclonic wind. The network in St Jose de Areal, Rachol, Davorlim, Gudi  and Guirdolim has been affected to the maximum as the network in these regions is overhead.
At St Jose de Areal, 2 transformer centres along with three spans of power lines has been completely damaged. At Rachol one transformer centre has collapsed and completely damaged and at Raia around 8 poles have broken. At Navelim, Aquem Baixo and Davorlim, major damage is due to conductor snapping and trees falling on lines.
At Fatorda, 11KV cable was damaged on the night of June 19 and supply to 15 transformer centres were affected which disrupted the supply to Mungul, Seraulim and Betalbatim area. In Margao city where most of the network is underground the disruption of supply was due to frequent tripping of incoming supply from 220KV Xeldem sub station. All 4 overhead 33 KV feeders feeding from Xeldem sub station to Margao city and coastal areas were under major breakdown due to falling of big trees between Cotombi river and Xeldem due to which entire Margao was affected.
The estimated damage and subsequent restoration of supply in the region is approximately amounting to Rs 25 lakh. The departmental engineers along with line staff have worked overnight and restored the supply at most of the locations. However supply to some areas is yet to be restored mainly due to recurring winds and heavy rain. The restoration work is in progress on a war footing and the same is expected to be completed within the next 24 hours.
