PANJIM: Pre-monsoon showers drenched Goa on Wednesday leading to water-logging across the State and disturbing the smooth flow of traffic. Rains severely affected normal life in the State as low-lying areas remained flooded during the day making it difficult for commuters.
Speaking to Herald, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Director, M L Sahu said, “Rainfall will continue for the next 48 hours. Today rainfall occurred due to the shore turf that developed away from the west coast. The turf is running from South Maharashtra to Kerala coast resulting in the rains in this area.”
He added, “Heavy rain is expected at isolated places and in the next 48 hours the rainfall will be reduced. The monsoon is expected to arrive in Goa by June 6 or 8.”
He clarified that the rains have nothing to do with Cyclone Mora in the Bay of Bengal. Sahu said “The cyclone has already weakened and it has no impact on Goa. The winds are not very strong and they are travelling at the speed of 10 kilometres per hour.”

Fire services gets 13 calls from Panjim
The Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services on Wednesday said the control room received 13 calls from Panjim of which all were related to falling trees.
Speaking to Herald, Station Fire Officer S R Parrikar said, “There were 13 calls received from Panjim. All were about falling of trees which were attended immediately. There was water logging also in some parts of the city. We received calls from Altinho, Merces, Caranzalem, Dona Paula and other parts of the city. Our station had three fire fighting vehicles which were put to use continuously thought the day.”
