The delegation impressed upon SP, Shekhar Prabhudessai to stop the illegal scrap yards, claiming they have been operating without permissions and have been posing a health hazard to the local villagers.
The Velim MLA told the media after the meeting that the SP had promised to compile a report on the scrap yards and forward the same to the district Collector for necessary action. “These illegal scrap yards have been existing in Sao Jose de Areal for several years. Even the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had promised action against them,” Benjamin recalled, while expressing his support to the villagers in their struggle to rid the village of the scrap yards.
Villager Freddy Travasso said the villagers will not compromise on the scrap yards and a survey by the village Panchayat unearthed around 39 scrap yards. “We will also move the district Collector on Monday to initiate necessary action against the scrap yards,” he added.
