PANJIM: Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho on Thursday alleged that some persons were attributing their motives to his suggestion to rename Porvorim as New Panjim town.
Ultimately everyone has freedom of expressing their view. If people don’t want it so shall it be. But party is supreme and I will go by whatever the party decides. Who can stop me from just giving a loud thinking or from giving an idea, which was there long ago.
Is there anything wrong in expressing ideas? he asked and added that people are attributing motives because Assembly elections are close by.
Godinho said that people of Goa will ultimately go by what work has been done and go by performance. The government led by Dr Pramod Sawant is doing an excellent work and for that work people are with the BJP. People will not fall prey to false promises of the Opposition parties.
When asked if the BJP will win 26-28 seats in the upcoming elections, Godinho said that the party will get comfortable majority and retain the power. “I am not a pundit or an astrologer to predict seats or give figures,” he said.
On Monday, Godinho has suggested that Porvorim be renamed as new Panjim town in view of growth in residential and commercial activities there.
Meanwhile, the Porvorim Residents Welfare Association founder secretary and former State Information Commissioner (SIC) Adv Juino de Souza has said it is high time that Porvorim be declared as the Capital of Goa in view that all important institutions, including the Goa Assembly Complex are situated in Porvorim and more government offices are being shifted there.
Reacting to Godinho’s suggestion to develop Porvorim as New Panjim, de Souza said that if the intention of the Minister is development of Porvorim then he must persuade the government to declare Porvorim as the capital. There is nothing remaining in Panjim to be developed as this city has reached saturation point and which is why government acquired huge tracts of land from the Communidade of Serula of which I am not only a gaunkar but also a shareholder and shifted most government offices at Porvorim.
