calangute: Residents, villagers and Shri Shantadurga Devasthan committee, on Friday, stopped a company working on the proposed sewage pumping station at Gaurawado, Calangute while strongly objecting the project on a Devasthan land.

The contractor on Friday had commenced digging of land with the help of earth moving machinery.
However, when locals came to know about it, residents, villagers and the Shri Shantadurga Devasthan committee rushed to the spot and questioned the contractor and PWD officials and stopped the ongoing work.
The situation had turned tense since the contractor was not ready to stop the work. However, before it could lead to law and order problems, local police rushed to spot and brought the situation under control.
President of Shri Shantadurga Devasthan committee claimed that the “work is illegal since the authorities do not have the required permissions as well” and said the “NOC issued to them is fraudulently obtained by one of the Committee members.”
Meanwhile four days back, residents, social forums, and the committee had strongly objected to setting up a sewage pumping station at the said site and had demanded the government to shift the plant to a non-residential area.
Committee members also claimed that the land has been acquired despite filing objections.
Villagers had also claimed that they want this project in Calangute but not in the Devasthan land and residential area since the project would cause health hazard for the people residing in the vicinity.
