PANJIM: The Goa State Human Rights Commission has taken suo-motu cognizance of the case of the 70-year-old bed-ridden woman who was allegedly assaulted by a constable and admitted to the Goa Medical College and has no where to go once she is discharged.
The commission, taking cognizance of a newspaper report, has issued notice to Bicholim police constable Amjad Karol, who is accused of assaulting the destitute, to appear in person or represented by a lawyer on June 2, 2014. The constable is currently in jail for the offence.
Four others – Secretary (Home), Director of Provedoria Institute, North Goa Superintendent of Police and Bicholim police inspector, have also been issued notices in this regard.
In the second week of March, Abida Beig was assaulted by the constable and left without clothes on the road in Bicholim. She was thereafter admitted to the Goa Medical College after a passer-by called 108 Ambulance.
She is currently under the care of GMC but if discharge, she has no family to go back to. Provedoria has also virtually failed to provide her immediate relief.
