Speeding Merc mows down rider

A 37-year-old two-wheeler rider was killed after a speed ing Mercedes alleged ly rammed his bike and dragged it for nearly two kilometres before both ve hicles caught fire and were completely gutted at Shin dolim, Sancoale, on Friday afternoon. The deceased was iden tified by police as Ashok Chavan, 37, a resident of Shindolim, Sancoale.

The force of the impact sent the motorcycle un der the Mercedes, with eyewitnesses saying the car continued dragging the two-wheeler along the road for nearly two kilo metres before the vehicles finally came to a halt and caught fire. The incident sparked panic in the area, particu larly as it occurred during the afternoon when school students were returning home. Residents said the speeding Mercedes could easily have struck children or pedestrians who were using the road at the time.

Fire personnel rushed to the spot after receiving in formation about the blaze and brought the fire under control. The Mercedes driv er, identified as Vidhyadhar Prabhu, 32, of Fatorda, was rescued from the vehicle dur ing the emergency operation. According to the police Prabhu was allegedly un der the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred. He was subsequently sent for medical examination.

The incident prompted Congress leader Olencio Simoes to demand stringent action against the driver. Simoes urged police to consider registering a murder case if the investigation establishes that the vehicle was deliberately or recklessly driven despite the alleged intoxication. The Verna police are conducting further investigations.
