“We fail to understand why the Parrikar government is pursuing the Mopa airport when reports say that two airports are not feasible and viable. The Mopa airport will have an adverse impact on the Goan economy”, Nelly said, while recalling the resolutions adopted by the South Goa Zilla Panchayat in the past opposing Mopa.
She pointed out that while the government has been dragging its feet to arm the Zilla Panchayats with powers, functions and funds as per the 73rd Constitutional Amendment, it is going ahead with the Mopa airport under the PPP model.
“I am opposing Mopa as Chairperson of the South Goa Zilla Chairperson, but also as the elected representative of Colva ZP constituency, comprising of the coastal villages of Colva, Betalbatim and Majorda-Utorda”, she said.
When it was pointed out that the government is going ahead with the new airport notwithstanding opposition brewing against Mopa, Nelly said the time has come for all Goans to come under one platform and oppose the airport.
Replying to a question, she felt that the Ministers and MLAs should take the lead to oppose Mopa, exuding confidence that people of
Goa will join the movement to oppose the
new airport.
