Vasco: Against the backdrop of the recent announcement made by the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), that the multi-facility complex at Headland Sada would be operational by this week, it appears that internal politics at the MMC has delayed the much anticipated market complex cum community hall project by six months.
It may be noted that the functioning of the MMC has been engulfed in simmering differences between Vasco BJP MLA Carlos Almeida and Mormugao BJP MLA Milind Naik, who back two different groups of councillors.
Speaking to Herald, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida changed his earlier stance and stated that the MMC Chairperson along with the ruling municipal panel, incidentally backed by him only, should take Naik, who is also the Urban Development Minister into confidence and accordingly go ahead with the planned development works such as the multi-facility complex.
When asked to confirm if he meant that the ruling councillors from his panel should meet Naik, Almeida declined to answer, but quickly reiterated that the councillors should take the Urban Development Minister into confidence when it comes to development works.
Naik was unavailable for comments on this topic.
However, councillors were not happy with the way things are panning out. Nilesh Navelkar, a councillor from the ruling panel made it clear that elected representatives should work in the interest of the public. “I feel such public utility projects need to be made operational as early as possible and our internal politics should be kept aside so that the people benefit from such projects,” he added.
