MARGAO: The Salcete Truck Owners Association has demanded that the State government acts against trucks from Karnataka operating in Goa for coal transport from Mormugao Port.

While addressing the media on Saturday, Association President Franky Gomes accused Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar
of appointing a contractor from Solapur, who has brought in a truck which
is registered in
Karnataka, for the coal transport at Vasco.
Gomes said this is not allowed and there is a fine of Rs 35,000 for such an offence. He asked the Chief Minister to investigate this matter.
Gomes also questioned how the Mormugao MLA, who was opposing coal transport when he was a Congress legislator, is now making coal transport a business after becoming a BJP MLA.
Association leader Herculano Niasso said this was an injustice to the truck owners from Vas-co who have been denied this work.
Niasso added that truck owners in Goa have been suffering since mining closed in Goa and thereafter, with the pandemic. He lamented that without mining restarting, there is hardly any work for the locals involved in this business and their livelihoods are at stake if they are denied opportunities in Goa.
