PANJIM: The state-of-the-art garbage treatment plant at the Saligao plateau will become operational on May 30, stated Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar after inspecting the plant site on Monday morning.
Parsekar, along with Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza, Saligao MLA and Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo and other officials inspected the garbage treatment plant.
Parsekar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of ‘Swachh Bharat’ is coming true, and this is one of the best examples where the Goa government had delivered a plant within the timeframe.
The Saligao garbage treatment plant, built at a cost of Rs 146 crore, is set to be inaugurated this month. It will handle approximately 100 tonnes of garbage from the coastal areas.
At present, around 20 to 30 tonnes of un-segregated garbage is dumped at the site everyday by the Calangute panchayat, while the SWMF, once ready, will need 100 tonnes per day to function optimally.
The SWMF is expected to handle waste from the entire North Goa coastal belt, which sees heavy tourist footfalls that create a lot of garbage. The plant will generate its own electricity of 0.5 to 1 MW per 100 tonnes, said officials of the company setting up the plant in association with SMC Infrastructure.
