SANGUEM: Roadside hawkers near the Sanguem fish market has led to acute traffic congestion along the narrow road between Curchorem and Sanguem.
Municipal authorities had initially allotted the place exclusively for the fish and meat vendors, but with an increase in customers at the fish market over the years, hawkers and vendors have erected stalls around the congested market.
The stalls have attracted passers by along the narrow road and this has made it difficult for motorists to proceed along the route.
The situation has become worse in recent times as a flower vendor and a readymade garment vendor have begun using the footpath to do business. Both vendors have laid their goods barely a metre from the road, leaving no space for pedestrians to use the footpath.
“With a large number of people crowding around the flower vendor, there are high chances that they could be knocked down by a moving vehicle. Besides, a large number of two-wheelers are also seen parked haphazardly by the roadside,” complained an unhappy resident.
“What is surprising is that the flower and readymade garments vendor are located at the congested fish market, when there is ample space in front of the newly constructed municipal market.”
“Authorities can easily direct these two vendors to shift to the open place in front of the newly constructed municipal market to ease the traffic congestion at the fish market and eliminate any danger to the pedestrians,” the resident added.
